Preparing for oral surgery

Before Surgery

  • Plan ahead by buying cold liquids, ice cream, Jello, and other soft foods so you will have them to eat for 24 hours after surgery.
  • If you have traveled a long distance, pack a small cooler of ice, cold liquids, and soft foods for your drive home.
  • Buy 4”x 4” gauze pads at your local drugstore in case you need extra.

The Day of Surgery

  • Arrive for your surgery with an empty stomach. DO NOT eat or drink anything (including water) after midnight the night before the surgery. If your doctor has prescribed medication for other illness, take it as scheduled with a small sip of water.
  • On the day of your surgery, if your procedure is to be performed in the clinic, wear a short sleeve shirt. This will allow and IV to be started easily in your arm.
  • If your procedure is to be performed in the operating room, wear clothes that are easily removed. Remove all jewelry, glasses, contact lenses, dentures, and any other prosthesis before surgery.
  • Have another adult come with you to the clinic or hospital. Your friend or family member should plan to wait for you, take you home after the surgery, and stay with you for awhile.
  • Remember – your escort is for your safety. Do not bring small children the day of your surgery.
  • Arrive early for your appointment to allow for any special preparations. If you are more than 15 minutes late, your appointment will be cancelled.

Cancellation of Scheduled Surgery

If you need to cancel your appointment, you must notify the clinic at least 24 hours before your surgery is scheduled. A Monday surgery should be cancelled the previous Friday. If you fail to cancel or reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance, you will not be rescheduled without approval.

Your surgery will be cancelled if you:

  • Eat or drink anything after midnight
  • Do not take medications as directed
  • Do not bring an adult who can stay with you and take you home after surgery
  • Are late for your appointment

After Surgery

  • Ask for a copy of the post-operative oral surgery instructions. Read the information before leaving the clinic.
  •  Ask the staff to explain any instructions you do not understand.
  • If you have any questions after you get home, call the clinic at (878)295-8322 Monday through Friday during office hours.
  • If you need to call after hours, on the weekend, or on a holiday, call (724)205-2464.
